Jeep was spotted testing a version of its Grand Cherokee believed to be powered by the awesome Hellcat engine; Aston Martin rolled out a new hypercar that promises to be the fastest production car ever built; and Mercedes-Benz started testing a successor to its almost 40-year-old G-Class. It’s the Week in Reverse, right here on Motor Authority.
Jeep CEO Mike Manley has confirmed the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 known as the Hellcat will be offered in the Grand Cherokee. This week we saw what’s believed to be a prototype for the Hellcat-powered GC. It’s due on the market in late 2017 and is widely expected to be called a Trackhawk, a name Jeep parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [NYSE:FCAU] has trademarked.
Aston Martin this week stunned the world with the unveiling of its AM-RB 001 hypercar developed with the Red Bull Racing Formula One team. The design is far from final since there’s a lengthy testing phase before production gears up in 2018, however Aston Martin is already promising the car will be just as fast as the LMP1 prototypes competing in the World Endurance Championship. We suspect it will also be able to keep up with most of the midfielders in Formula One.
Mercedes is working on the first full redesign of its G-Class since the iconic SUV made its debut almost four decades ago. The exterior design might not be changing much but under the skin there’s a new platform that should improve stability and offer better fuel economy. Interior space is also expected to get a boost.
The new G-Class is still a couple of years off but Mercedes has plenty of SUVs already on sale. A new one is the GLC Coupe which we recently had the pleasure of driving. And no, despite its name, the vehicle isn’t actually a coupe.
Another car in the headlines was the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette. It appears the rumors of General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] adopting a mid-engine layout for its new Corvette, the C8, are about to ring true. A prototype of a car with strong Corvette styling cues was spotted and is clearly mid-engined.
