In March we brought you news about an electric car racing series being developed for production-based cars, namely the Tesla [NSDQ:TSLA] Model S.
At a ceremony held at Ibiza on Tuesday, the new series was officially launched as the Electric GT Championship (EGT).
The ceremony included the unveiling of the Model S race car that will compete in the inaugural season. The version chosen by EGT organizers is the 416-horsepower Model S P85+, because of its rear-wheel-drive system.
The cars have been modified for racing, mainly in the area of weight reduction, safety, cooling, braking and aerodynamics. The powertrain, including battery and electronic control software, has been left untouched, though.
EGT says its first season, which will run in 2017 and consist of seven races, will have ten teams with two drivers each. Each round will include a 20-minute practice session, a 30-minute qualifying session, a day race and finally a dusk race.
The cars will travel approximately 37 miles in each of the races, which will be held at proper race tracks including some Formula One-spec locations. The list includes the Nürburgring grand prix track in Germany; the Circuit de Catalonia in Spain; Mugello in Italy; Brands Hatch in the United Kingdom; Zandvoort in the Netherlands; Estoril in Portugal and Paul Ricard in France. EGT says it will also host some non-championship rounds in the Americas.
Electric car racing has already spawned a FIA-sanctioned competition in the form of the Formula E Championship, which has been gaining in popularity with each season. Though the EGT doesn’t have the backing of motorsport’s governing body just yet, it should provide plenty of entertainment, especially for the rabid Tesla fans all around the globe.
